"I tend to put a bit of abstraction into my figure work.  I then turn and put more figure into my abstraction!”

E. L. Stewart

The artist was born in a large stone mansion in Michigan, situated between Chicago and Detroit, and grew up in the Midwest surrounded by creativity from an early age. Her father painted, while her mother danced—fueled by strong coffee and a love of chocolate. Art was not a discovery later in life; it was woven into her beginnings.

After high school, she left home to attend a private design school on a talent scholarship, where she studied Illustration, Graphic Design, and Advertising. This period marked profound personal and artistic growth, set against a backdrop of cultural upheaval. It was the era of the Vietnam conflict—a time of marches, protests, division, and unrest. As a young artist and woman navigating a turbulent society, she faced difficult questions about identity, purpose, and survival through creative work.

The paintings she creates today are rooted in those early years. They carry a deep longing for peace, shaped by memory and experience, and are often infused with quiet joy. Her work reflects a lifelong pursuit of harmony—between past and present, struggle and hope—expressed through imagery that continues to evolve while remaining grounded in its original intent.
