Mary Sirody
My studio is a converted shed, 100 steps down from my house in the high desert of Agua Dulce, California. It is light-filled and airy, and I feel very lucky to have such a nice space.
I paint every day and work on many canvases at once. I love it all, the highs and the lows. But there is nothing like starting a new painting:
A blank canvas.
A fresh start.
Anything is possible.
This might be the one that satisfies, that gratifies, that soars.
The one that quenches the unquenchable need to paint.
I might have an idea.
Slap on color. Big, bold shapes. Swathes of color.
Draw, smear, scrape.
Maybe tell a story, a feeling: rage, chaos, purity, peace.
What is it? I don’t know anymore. Just continue.
Slap it on, scrape it off, uncover, discover, refine.
AHHH!
Catapult will be hanging in Gallery 825 this summer.
Living Room just finished hanging in Woodward Contemporary in San Diego, and the National Juried show in the Visual Arts Center in Punta Gorda, Florida.
