Watercolor with Judy Thompson

Studio Story
Being an empty nester has its perks—most notably, the chance to transform a spare bedroom into a dedicated studio. Small but highly efficient, this cozy space is where ideas take shape and evolve into finished paintings. It’s a place of energy, focus, and creative renewal.
One of the most meaningful projects to emerge from this studio is a collaboration with my daughter, Kristin Gifford, a published poet. Together, we’ve merged our two art forms into Becoming Midwest, Life Between, an exhibition at the Visual Arts Center at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls featuring 27 artworks and 12 poems.
This mother-daughter collaboration explores the enduring spirit of the heartland through two generations and two distinct creative voices. Blending historical narrative, personal identity, and environmental stewardship, the exhibition creates a layered dialogue between visual art and poetry. On view in the Bates Trimble Gallery from February 20 through August 23, it marks a significant milestone in my artistic journey—one rooted in interpreting the Midwest through watercolor.
