Cowboys | Western Art | Wild Horses | Frontier Children | Frontier Women | Native Americans | Characters of the Old West
“Stories of the Old West called to Shirley at an early age. It took her years to finally respond to her calling as an artist, to depict the people who had intrigued her as a child.”
Bio Shirley Quaid
Award winning artist Shirley Quaid developed an interest in the Old West at an early age. Her mind now meanders to the characters and fortitude of the past as she concentrates her paintings on the late 1880’s. Rather than the traditional Western art of cowboys on horseback, she often offers impeccable depictions in portrait form showing the interplay of light and shadows caught in the moments of traditional life from the 1880’s. She paints from models dressed in historically accurate clothing for the late 1800’s. It is important that the portrayals be true to the people of the time. It has been said “Shirley Quaid paints the Old West with familiarity. Her work takes the viewer into a time and place tucked into the past.”
Shirley Quaid has studied with many well-known artists and paints daily in her rural Oklahoma studio. She is honored that her work is in collections all over the nation and internationally.
