"The plein air experience always presents a battle.  It starts off nice enough, but then wind will flop your canvas on its face, while tying you in knots with the umbrella and dog leash.  Insects... need I say more?"

Sally Delap–John

Sally Delap-John is best known for her plein air landscapes and village scenes, especially those inspired by the light, architecture, and natural beauty of Northern New Mexico. Her work often captures the rugged landscapes, old adobe villages, and sweeping skies of the region in vibrant oil paintings.   She works alla prima — that is, completing a painting in a single session, whether in the field or from life in a studio setting.

She studied art and geography at California State University, Fresno, earning both a B.A. and an M.A.  During college, she spent a year studying in Florence, Italy, where she was deeply influenced by European masterpieces and landscapes.

Delap-John’s work has been featured in gallery shows and group exhibitions celebrating the art and landscapes of the American Southwest.   She has earned many awards and has been asked to judge her peers.  She has also been a featured artist in publications:  New Mexico, Southwest Art, and Western Art Collector.
