Carol Amos
Carol Amos was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and grew up in the Midwest. Her grandfather was an artist and gold leaf frame maker and her grandmothers were both artists who introduced her to painting in oils. She has enjoyed a lifelong passion for creating art and incorporating art into daily life while raising her family and pursuing careers in chemistry and commercial real estate. She currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri, and Scottsdale, Arizona, and enjoys being a full time artist and grandmother. Her oil paintings depict the landscape, plants and animals of the Southwest and the Midwest, and are exhibited and collected throughout the United States.
Artist's Statement
"My realistic oil paintings are created to share the special sense of place, beauty or unique circumstance of something I saw that caught my eye.
My compositions emphasize the dramatic contrasts between sun and shadow and the sculptural shapes and vibrant colors of plants, animals and landscape. I enjoy presenting my subjects in a close-up format that celebrates the beauty of these subjects which are sometimes quite small and often seldom seen. I like painting the contradiction of delicate translucent cactus flowers growing among the plants' many spines, and compositions that feature animals and plants together with the landscape around them. Sometimes a finished painting might seem like an abstraction, but I always start every piece with an inspiration that I have actually seen.
Most of my work is studio painting, but I am never without my camera (now my phone) and find inspiration and references for future paintings almost everywhere and every day. When I see something that makes me think "Wow - look at that", my next thought is "How can I translate that special something into a painting to share with others?"
